Niagara Regional Police Service held another RIDE spot check this weekend, leading to one impaired driving arrest.
Saturday, February 21, officers stopped around 350 vehicles at multiple checkpoints around the Niagara Region Saturday night, asking drivers if they had consumed any alcohol or drugs.
In total, 24 roadside breath tests were conducted, with a 47-year-old driver from St. Catharines arrested after multiple samples showed a blood-alcohol level at twice the legal limit. Two other drivers also received a 7-day license suspension after testing in the 'alert' range.
Overall, police laid 12 provincial charges and issued 4 warnings to drivers including:
- Driving while under suspension
- Having an expired permit
- Using a handheld communication device
- 3 charges for children not being properly secured
NRPS says enforcement programs like RIDE continue to be necessary as impaired driving remains the leading criminal offence causing death in Canada.
