Investigation into 2024 Fort Erie shelter assault leads to arrest

An arrest has been made after an investigation into sexual assault allegations at a Fort Erie shelter from February to April 2024.

On Monday, Feb 16, Niagara Regional Police Service arrested 57-year-old Fredy Cardona of Niagara Falls and charged him with:

  • Sexual assault,
  • 2 counts of Impersonating a Peace Officer
  • 2 counts of Intimidation.

Cardona has worked in various roles for community agencies in the Niagara Region since 2023, supporting newcomers and other vulnerable individuals, including refugees and asylum seekers.

Detectives believe there could be other victims and are asking anyone with information related to the incident to contact police or call Crime Stoppers.
