Zero tolerance: Niagara Police to seize drugs used in public

The Niagara Regional Police Service says it is responding to community concerns with a no-tolerance policy on open-air illicit drug use.

Police emphasize that the goal is not to criminalize those struggling with addiction but to ensure safer and more welcoming public spaces.

NRPS recently announced that when officers encounter open drug use, individuals will be directed to stop, substances will be seized, and people moved from the area.

Where possible, officers will connect individuals with local resources, including treatment services and crisis supports. Arrests and enforcement actions will be taken only when deemed necessary.
