Woman injured in St. Catharines apartment shooting

Two people have been arrested and a firearm seized

Niagara Regional Police have laid multiple firearm and assault charges after a woman was unintentionally shot inside a St. Catharines apartment Friday afternoon.

Officers were called around 12:20 p.m. to the area of Ontario Street and St. Paul Street, where a woman had been injured by a gunshot fired from a neighbouring unit.

Police say officers provided first aid and helped evacuate the woman, who was taken to an out-of-region hospital by paramedics. Her condition has not been disclosed.

The Emergency Task Unit and K9 Unit secured the building shortly after the shooting, arresting two individuals. A search warrant executed Saturday led to the seizure of a firearm.

Andre Smith, 38, and Anikkita Beckford-Stone, 20, both of St. Catharines, are facing several charges including aggravated assault, careless use of a firearm, and possession of a loaded firearm. Smith is also charged with possessing a firearm contrary to a prohibition order.

Both appeared by video for a bail hearing on Saturday and were remanded into custody.

Police say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers of Niagara.
