What's Good in Niagara? West Niagara Challenger Baseball brings inclusive sports to Grimsby

Every child deserves the chance to experience the joy of playing baseball, regardless of their abilities.

That's the goal behind West Niagara Challenger Baseball, a new inclusive program launching this summer in Grimsby for children with disabilities and additional needs.

Coordinator Mel Capretta says the Blue Jays Foundation helps make this possible.

Rather than focusing on competition, the program is designed to help participants build confidence, learn new skills and enjoy being part of a team. Young baseball players from the community also volunteer as buddies and mentors, creating meaningful connections while encouraging participants every step of the way.

Capretta hopes Challenger Baseball is just the beginning, with the long-term goal of creating even more inclusive recreational opportunities for children throughout West Niagara. Anyone interested in registering a player, volunteering or supporting the program can contact her by email for more information.

Registration remains open for the program, which runs Monday evenings from 5 to 6 p.m. at Oaks Park in Grimsby beginning July 13.

Organizers are also looking for volunteers and community partners to help the program grow.
