The Duty Free at the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie is back open for business, with a renewed focus on shopping, food services and local employment.

The store celebrated its grand reopening after new operators took over in June. General Manager Sherri Gidney says the location had been left empty after its previous operator went into receivership, leading many in the community to believe it had closed permanently.

Gidney says the new team has since restocked the store.

The new market is expected to open within the next month, bringing back some familiar features for travellers who remember when the location housed Tim Hortons and McDonald's.

The reopening is also creating employment opportunities in Fort Erie and the surrounding area. Gidney says the business currently employs dozens.

With the store now operating again and plans underway to expand its food offerings, the Duty Free at the Peace Bridge is looking to re-establish itself as a convenient stop for travellers crossing the border.
