Fire safety is something many children learn about at school through fire drills and lessons - but Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire Prevention and Public Education Officer Dylan Skubel says those lessons are just as important for adults.
Skubel says children are regularly exposed to fire safety education, but adults can sometimes go years without revisiting the basics.
That's why Fire Prevention Week is an opportunity for everyone to refresh their knowledge - from young children learning what to do in an emergency, to adults making sure they still know how to prevent a fire and what to do if one starts.
Skubel says this year's campaign also puts a focus on lithium-ion batteries, which are becoming more common in our everyday lives. He recommends using manufacturer-approved batteries and chargers, and unplugging devices once they're fully charged.
On the topic of batteries, Skubel says making sure your alarms are all fully charged is important as well.
The message is simple: fire safety isn't just something for kids to learn at school. It's something the whole family can benefit from revisiting regularly.
