What's Good in Niagara? Battle of Ridgeway's 160th Anniversary

Canadian Veterans, local historians, and other members of the community gathered Sunday on the north side of Garrison Road between Ridge Road and Burleigh Road to commemorate the Battle of Ridgeway's 160th Anniversary.

Occurring a year before Canadian Confederation in 1867, some historians - such as Clark Bernat, Fort Erie's Manager of Museum and Cultural Services - feel the battle had a direct impact on kickstarting a swell of national pride and need for sovereignty.

Bernat also says, with most of the Region's battles fought during the War of 1812, this one has a unique place in local and Canadian history.

A cairn was originally built at the location in memory of those who were wounded or died, and a plaque with their names placed in front of it 10 years ago for the 150th anniversary.
