The Niagara Advocates With Lived/Living Experience will hold a “Vigil For Those We’ve Lost To The Cold” outside Niagara Regional Headquarters this evening. Thursday, January 29, starting at 5:45 p.m.
The date was chosen to mark two significant moments. January 26 is the first anniversary of the death of Bob Allen, who died from exposure and hypothermia on James Street in downtown St. Catharines after being turned away from a shelter. At the time, temperatures were recorded at -8°C.
Later tonight, Regional Council will consider a motion from Councillor Haley Bateman that would lower the temperature threshold for opening emergency shelters from the current -15°C to 0°C.
