St. Paul Street West train bridge to reopen to traffic Friday

The St. Paul Street West bridge in St. Catharines is reopening at the end of the day today.

The announcement came from Niagara Region officials this morning, as the CNR Bridge Reconstruction project is now complete.

The bridge serves as a major artery for drivers going from the downtown core of St. Catharines to Western Hill, and has been closed for over a year as crews demolished the old bridge before rebuilding a new one.

The bridge was originally built in 1922, and the region says after extensive inspection and evaluation, it had to be replaced.

The project was part of the larger St. Catharines GO Station Precinct Development Project, which also includes upgrades to the GO station and surrounding infrastructure.
