Ontario’s police watchdog has cleared a Niagara Regional Police officer after a shooting in Welland.
The Special Investigations Unit says the incident occurred December 19, 2025, as officers were on Second Street to keep the peace while municipal crews removed an illegally installed fence.
Investigators say 59-year-old Daniel Tronko fired multiple rounds, striking an officer’s ballistic vest, before police returned fire and hit him in the shoulder.
Director Joseph Martino determined the officer acted in response to an imminent threat, and no criminal charges will be laid, while Tronko is facing six counts of attempted murder.
