Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has cleared Niagara police officers of any criminal wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old man in Welland.
Tactical officers were sent to a home near Ontario Road and King Street on December 13th, 2025, to arrest the man in connection with a reported shooting during an intimate partner violence incident in Mississauga the day before.
The SIU says the man repeatedly fired at officers during the arrest, and police returned fire.
Director Joseph Martino found there were no reasonable grounds to believe the officers committed a criminal offence, concluding their firearms were the only available tools capable of stopping the threat.
