A police officer in Welland is in hospital with a gunshot wound.
Niagara Regional Police were called this morning to a home in Welland by by-law officials to keep the peace, at which point an officer was fired at by the occupant of the home.
NRPS Constable Rich Hingley says at this time, the suspect is contained to a residence, but you're asked to avoid the area around Lincoln Street, Plymouth Road and King Street.
Constable Hingley adds that the officer's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The officer that was shot has since been released from hospital with minor injuries. During the interaction in which the officer was shot, NRPS officers returned fire - meaning Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate.
A hold and secure had been put in place at Welland hospital, which has since been lifted. As of 7:00pm, police say they have initiated tactics and equipment to determine the wellbeing of the man inside the home. Negotiations continue as officers work towards a peaceful surrender.
A shelter in place remains in effect for the area, while staff have been moved out of both nearby schools.
