The City of St. Catharines has appointed Shannon Kitchings as its Poet Laureate for 2026, as part of the City’s 150th anniversary.
As Poet Laureate, Kitchings will serve as an artistic ambassador, using poetry, performance, and public events to engage residents, celebrate civic pride, and explore the history and culture of St. Catharines.
Her work draws on themes of connection, embodiment, and accessibility in the arts, with influences including Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Richard Van Camp, and Andrea Gibson.
Kitchings was selected through a competitive open call by a committee of local literary artists.
