River Lions name Kimbal MacKenzie new Head Coach & GM

The Niagara River Lions have announced a significant leadership transition.

Victor Raso, the longest-tenured and most accomplished head coach in Canadian Elite Basketball League history, will transition from his roles as Head Coach and GM into an advisory position as Senior Advisor, Player Personnel & Basketball Operations.

Since joining the franchise in 2018, Raso has been synonymous with the River Lions’ rise, leading the team to back-to-back championships, never missing the playoffs, and helping establish one of the strongest cultures in Canadian professional basketball. His influence has extended well beyond the court, shaping the identity, standards, and reputation of the organization across the league.

Taking over the dual role of Head Coach and GM is Kimbal Mackenzie, the team’s captain and current Brand & Community Ambassador. The team says Mackenzie represents a purposeful internal succession, bringing championship experience, leadership, and a deep understanding of the culture Raso helped build.

Since joining the organization in 2023, Mackenzie has been a central figure both on and off the court, earning recognition for his community involvement and leadership. His coaching resume includes xperience at Ridley College, an interim head coaching role with Niagara College’s women’s program, and international playing experience with Great Britain.

With Raso remaining actively involved in an advisory capacity, the River Lions say the organization plans to enter this next chapter with a strong foundation and a clear commitment to sustained excellence.
