St. Catharines Regional Councillor Haley Bateman is bringing forward a motion asking Niagara Region Public Health to take a formal role in the assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment of the former General Motors site on Ontario Street.

The 20-hectare property, now owned by Bayshore, remains one of Niagara’s most significant redevelopment sites and has been the focus of environmental concern for years.

The motion calls for Public Health to be involved early, helping review studies, identify risks, and support public communication as the project moves forward.

Bateman says the goal is greater transparency and stronger oversight on a site with long-standing community concern.

If approved, Public Health would also provide regular updates to Council and the public on progress and key milestones.

The motion will be considered at an upcoming Regional Council meeting.
