Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled new measures to strengthen Canada’s border security as part of the upcoming federal budget.
The government says it will hire 1,000 new Canada Border Services Agency officers to crack down on illegal guns, drugs, and stolen goods, and to expand enforcement at key air, land, rail, and marine ports of entry.
The announcement comes as the federal government pledges to boost public safety nationwide, including hiring 1,000 new RCMP officers and strengthening bail and sentencing laws for violent and repeat offenders.
To help attract new recruits, the CBSA’s training stipend will increase for the first time since 2005 — rising from $125 to $525 per week.
