Niagara Region has received more than $89,000 from the Ontario Community Environment Fund to support a project aimed at expanding Niagara's tree canopy.
Growing Niagara's Canopy is a partnership with the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority that will see over 7100 native trees planted over the next two years at three Regionally owned properties.
The project will restore more than 4.5 hectares of land to diverse forest, helping improve biodiversity, strengthen ecological resilience and support climate change adaptation.
Planting will take place at Waterworks Park in Thorold, the Port Dalhousie Wastewater Treatment Plant in St. Catharines and the Garner Road Biosolids Facility in Niagara Falls, with five of six planned planting events expected to involve community volunteers.
