Ontario Land Tribunal decision sides with City of St. Catharines over 2023 waste facility fire

An Ontario Land Tribunal decision has upheld most of the City of St. Catharines’ $4.2 million recovery order against Ssonix Products, confirming the City can reclaim about $3.7 million in cleanup expenses after the 2023 hazardous waste facility explosion and fire.

The ruling acknowledges significant hazardous waste spills, neighbourhood evacuations, and the need for emergency contractors to contain the environmental impact.

Only costs unrelated to direct spill mitigation were removed, leaving nearly 90% of the City’s claim intact.
