A major investigation into organized auto theft in Niagara has led to multiple arrests and millions of dollars in stolen vehicles being recovered.
Niagara Regional Police say Project Jack Links began after the theft of a single Lexus SUV, but eventually uncovered criminal networks tied to more than 112 vehicle theft-related incidents across Southern Ontario.
Investigators say newer model Lexus and Toyota vehicles were being stolen and prepared for export through the Port of Montreal, with destinations linked to West Africa.
Police say the following suspects have been charged or are wanted as part of Project Jack Links:
- Two 17-year-old males from St. Catharines charged with offences including possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, disguised with intent, failing to comply with release orders, attempted indictable offences, motor vehicle theft, use of stolen credit cards, theft under $5,000 from a motor vehicle, and failing to comply with a sentence order.
- Farouk Alawad, 23, of Hamilton, arrested following a Hamilton search warrant execution.
- Nemr Alawad, 18, of Hamilton, also arrested in the Hamilton phase of the investigation.
- Five male youths, aged 16 and 17, from Peel and Halton regions, arrested after four search warrants were executed on May 14. Their identities are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police have also issued warrants for:
- Ryan Ramayah Permauloo, 20, of North Dumfries, wanted for motor vehicle theft, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of auto theft devices, disguise with intent, and failing to comply with release orders.
- Mamadi Kaba, 22, of Quebec, wanted for motor vehicle theft, operation while prohibited, mischief under $5,000, and failing to comply with probation and release orders.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing, with more arrests and charges expected in connection to over 100 additional thefts across Ontario.
