The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is pursuing provincial disaster assistance as the community moves from flood response into long-term recovery.
Town staff are working with the Province of Ontario to document damage, response costs and flood reports to support potential funding claims for the municipality, residents and eligible small businesses.
Two provincial programs are being considered: Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance, which can help municipalities with extraordinary response and recovery costs, and Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians, which may provide support to eligible residents, small businesses, farms and not-for-profits.
Neither program requires the Town to declare a state of emergency, but funding is not automatic and can take several months to process.
The Town says it will continue working with the Province to clarify eligibility and application requirements, and will share more information as it becomes available.
