Town says no infrastructure can completely prevent flooding during extreme weather
Niagara-on-the-Lake is responding after a major overnight rainfall event caused flooding across parts of the community.
The Town says the hardest-hit area was Virgil, where it says more than 146 millimetres of rain fell in just five hours, overwhelming drainage systems already impacted by saturated ground, high lake levels and full waterways.
Municipal crews have been working since overnight Monday, monitoring conditions, operating pumps, clearing hazards and responding to flooding concerns.
The Town says drinking water remains safe, with no watermain breaks or interruptions reported.
Officials say while investments have been made to improve stormwater systems, no infrastructure can completely prevent flooding during extreme weather events.
Residents are reminded to avoid flooded roads and waterways, and to report any flooding or sewer backups to the Town.
