
River Lions, Jackfish and Ironbacks all with multi-game weekends
Niagara River Lions (Canadian Elite Basketball League)
The Niagara River Lions celebrated their 2024 CEBL Championship on Friday, with a banner raising and ring ceremony at the Meridian Centre for members of last summer's roster. This was followed by a matchup with the Edmonton Stingers, which saw Edmonton roll to a 106-88 victory. Khalil Ahmad led the way for the River Lions with 30 points.
Niagara bounced back on Sunday afternoon with a 90-89 win over the Ottawa Blackjacks in the nation's capital. Much like Friday, Khalil Ahmad led the way for Niagara with a team-high 21 points, while Nathan Cayo and Jahvon Blair both had 13 in the victory.
The River Lions are now off until Friday when when host the Montreal Alliance in a rematch of last year's CEBL semifinal.
Welland Jackfish (Intercounty Baseball League)
After a dominant 23-2 win over the Kitchener Panthers on Thursday, the Welland Jackfish battled the Barrie Baycats on Saturday, falling 8-7. They returned to The Pond for Father's Day on Sunday, notching a 1-0 shutout win over the Guelph Royals.
The Jackfish are off until Friday when they take on the London Majors in London.
Niagara Ironbacks (Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League)
Niagara's newest baseball team, the Ironbacks, finished the weekend on a high note.
Friday evening saw the Newark Pilots pick up a 10-6 win at George Taylor Field, before the Ironbacks travelled to Niagara Falls, USA for a matchup with the first place Niagara Falls Americans - which the Americans won 9-5.
Sunday saw the Geneva Red Wings pick up a 7-5 win over the Ironbacks in St. Catharines in the first half of a doubleheader, before the Ironsbacks won 8-4 in the late game. Grayson Briggs and Devan Madore each had 2 RBI in the victory.
