A shelter-in-place in Welland has been lifted, as the suspect in a police shooting Friday morning has been arrested by Niagara Regional Police.
59-year-old Daniel Tronko, who is accused of shooting an officer during a by-law call yesterday, was arrested by police around 7:30am and charged with attempted murder.
Constable Rich Hingley says he also shot at police drones overnight.
Tronko was brought to an out of region hospital for treatment, while the officer shot has been released from hospital with minor injuries. Local schools and the Welland hospital were both locked down throughout Friday morning, but that lockdown was lifted in the early afternoon. Police services from Hamilton and Halton were also brought in to assist Niagara Police, which had sent as many resources as possible to the scene.
A shelter-in-place remained in the area of Plymouth Road and Lincoln Street for nearly 24-hours as police negotiated with Tronko, who's residence is a large church on Second Street.
Constable Rich Hingley thanks the community for their cooperation.
At the scene, a large construction machine that was being used by by-law officials could be seen with a fence post inside of it, while broken windows on Tronko's church could be seen from the street - along with painted messages on his fence. The SIU has taken over the investigation, and was on scene Saturday.
Hingley adds that police had been communicating with Tronko over the telephone throughout the day.
