Niagara Region Public Health has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in 2025.
The case was identified in Niagara Falls, but officials are reminding all residents and visitors across the region to take precautions against mosquito bites.
Most people infected with West Nile virus show no symptoms, but about 20 per cent may experience flu-like illness and fatigue.
In rare cases, about one per cent, the infection can lead to serious complications, including severe headaches, neck stiffness, confusion, weakness, and sensitivity to light.
Seniors and individuals with weakened immune systems are especially at risk.
