Niagara Region implements more school zone safety measures ahead of student return

Students across Niagara will be heading back to class next Tuesday - meaning more pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles will be sharing the roads.

The Niagara Region says it's been making several road safety upgrades near schools, including flashing beacons on school zone signs, freshly painted “school ahead” markings and pop-up bollards designed to slow traffic.

Leading pedestrian intervals have also been installed at 15 signalized intersections across Niagara, giving pedestrians a head start into crosswalks before drivers receive a green light.

The Region is reminding drivers that posted speed limits apply all day, not just when school zone beacons are flashing, with more safety upgrades planned for 2027.
