Niagara Region has been recognized for its work to improve water and energy efficiency at Rapelje Lodge.
The Region received the Ontario Water Works Association’s 2026 Water and Energy Efficiency Award of Excellence at last week’s Regional Council meeting.
Upgrades included an ozone-based laundry system and low-flow toilets, cutting water use at the long-term care home by more than 2,500 cubic metres in 2025, a 16 per cent reduction.
The laundry system also reduced hot-water and natural gas use by up to 45 per cent, while toilet flush volumes dropped from 13.2 litres to 4.8 litres.
Niagara says the same efficiency measures have now been implemented at all seven of its long-term care homes.
