Niagara Region has approved a new 25-year waste strategy aimed at reducing waste and improving sustainability across the community.
The plan, covering 2026 to 2051, focuses on boosting waste diversion, improving system efficiency, and lowering environmental impacts while continuing to meet future needs.
While the Region has up to 40 years of landfill capacity remaining, officials say long-term planning is essential.
Starting in 2027, work will begin on future disposal options. The strategy also targets reducing landfill use, noting that about two-thirds of garbage could be diverted through programs like the Green Bin and Blue Box.
