Niagara College researching benefits of robot pets for dementia patients

Researchers at Niagara College are studying how robotic animals can help seniors living with dementia.

The College’s “Fins, Feathers and Fur” project uses robotic seals, birds, cats, and dogs to encourage conversation, comfort, and emotional connection in long-term care homes.

Research lead Christine Wilkinson says staff are being trained to use the devices more effectively as therapeutic tools.

The project is now expanding to care homes across Niagara, with hopes of growing nationally.
