Niagara amalgamation not included in Regional Chair's governance proposal to province

A new proposal aimed at modernizing Niagara’s regional government has been sent to the province - and it does not involve amalgamation.

In a letter to Municipal Affairs Minister Rob Flack, the Regional Chair Bob Gale says consultations with councillors, mayors and residents revealed broad support for reducing duplication and cutting the number of elected officials.

The plan would shrink Regional Council to the 12 local mayors plus the Regional Chair, with votes weighted by population.

It would also reduce the size of municipal councils across Niagara and explore shared services to improve efficiency.

Supporters say the proposal would create a leaner and more responsive system while maintaining local representation and avoiding full amalgamation.
