A new policy brief from Brock University’s Niagara Community Observatory reveals that food insecurity in Niagara is more widespread than previously understood.
Professor Joanne Heritz, author of Increasing Hunger in Niagara: The Need for Action, found that many programs, such as congregate meal services offered by churches and community groups were previously overlooked in data collection.
Between 2022 and 2024, food bank use rose by more than 150 per cent in parts of Niagara, while over 358,000 congregate meals were served across the region in 2024 alone.
The report calls for urgent action to address the growing need for food assistance.
