Mental Health Week: DSBN looking to bridge the gap between parents and student stress

The District School Board of Niagara's Parent Involvement Committee is looking to bridge the gap of understanding between parents and students when it comes to the stresses of school.

Being Mental Health Week, DSBN is hosting a three-night speaker series tomorrow in St. Catharines, Wednesday in Welland and virtually on Thursday to help parents and caregivers support children and teens through the pressures of everyday life.

Superintendent of Student Achievement and Well-Being Michael Burns says this is a great opportunity to share with parents how they deal with things like stress in a school setting.

The series features Ms. Jen Alexander, a nationally recognized leader in the movement to build trauma-sensitive schools.

Parent Involvement Committee Co-Chair Melissa Lofquist says parents being involved in their children's school life can have massive benefits, especially for younger kids.

Across all three sessions, parents and caregivers will explore:
-How stress can show up differently for children and teens at home and at school
-The difference between healthy stress and overwhelming stress
-Practical ways families can support children and teens through daily pressures
-How children and teens can build skills to navigate life’s ups and downs
