Mayor Campion pens letter to PM Carney regarding justice reforms

Welland's Mayor is demanding urgent justice reforms following the sexual assault of a young child that has left the community shaken.

In a letter sent to Prime Minister Mark Carney, as well as federal and provincial justice officials, Frank Campion called for tougher bail and sentencing laws, the elimination of parole for crimes of extreme sexual violence, and stricter enforcement of the National Sex Offender Registry.

He said while no punishment can undo the harm, change is needed to ensure such crimes are met with the strongest possible consequences.

Locally, the city has pledged to continue working with police, community safety partners, and support agencies to better protect children and families.
