The Niagara IceDogs are getting set for a busy preseason, with six exhibition games giving head coach Jake Grimes his first chance to see his new group tested in game situations.
Grimes says training and rookie camp have provided plenty of encouraging signs, but preseason will take things to another level as the players compete against outside competition and begin putting the team’s systems into action.
Grimes says the preseason games will also help determine which players are ready to take the next step, as the competition moves from rookie camp, to main camp, to exhibition play and eventually the regular season.
He says the IceDogs are looking to establish an aggressive style on both sides of the puck, with speed, effort and short shifts playing a major role. The team is also working to build chemistry within a group that features returning veterans, young players and newcomers from other organizations.
Grimes says that process is already underway, with the players showing good communication, leadership and a willingness to learn during camp.
That new group also had an opportunity to meet directly with fans at the IceDogs’ town hall last week. Grimes says the questions were strong, and he enjoyed the opportunity to hear directly from supporters.
The IceDogs begin their preseason schedule Thursday, followed by games Friday and Sunday, as Grimes and his staff continue putting the pieces together ahead of the regular season.
