The Humane Society of Greater Niagara and the City of St. Catharines are reminding residents that co-existing with wild turkeys does not include feeding them.
The birds have become a familiar sight along Martindale Road, but recent reports of turkeys being struck by vehicles have raised concerns about their safety.
Humane Society officers have observed food being left out in public spaces, which can cause wildlife to lose their natural fear of people and linger in dangerous areas like roadways.
Officials are urging residents to stop feeding wildlife, secure food waste, and for drivers to slow down and stay alert to help keep both the turkeys and the community safe.
