Everyday talking, more structured bedtimes can help come school time

Getting ready for kindergarten starts long before the first school bell.

Brock University professor Yvonne Messenger says building healthy habits over the summer can help children succeed once they enter the classroom.

Her advice includes reading and talking together every day to build language skills, encouraging active play to strengthen motor development, limiting screen time, and gradually shifting bedtime routines before school starts.

She also says giving children opportunities to practice everyday tasks like dressing themselves and opening lunch containers can build confidence and independence.
