MPP Wayne Gates is calling on the province to take action to protect the Fort Erie Racetrack and secure a long-term funding agreement for Ontario’s horse racing industry.
Gates told the legislature the track has supported local jobs and tourism for more than a century, but its future is now uncertain due to delays in a proposed 35-million-dollar deal involving OLG, Ontario Racing, and Woodbine Entertainment Group.
He says concerns include restrictions on horse movement between tracks, scheduling changes to major events like the Prince of Wales Stakes, and a lack of purse increases for workers facing rising costs.
