Niagara has reported its first laboratory-confirmed human case of West Nile virus in 2026.
The case was identified in St. Catharines, prompting Public Health to remind residents and visitors to protect themselves from mosquito bites.
Most people infected with West Nile have no symptoms, but about 20 per cent develop flu-like symptoms and fatigue.
A small number can develop serious illness, including severe headaches, weakness and confusion, with older adults and people with weakened immune systems at greater risk.
Public Health recommends insect repellent, long clothing and removing standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
Officials are also warning about the Tiger mosquito, which was recently detected in Niagara and can bite aggressively during the daytime.
