Fire crews in Welland are still on location at the Humberstone landfill battling a blaze.

The fire was first reported on social media around 6:00pm, as crews from Welland, Pelham, Port Colborne, Wainfleet, Niagara Falls, Fort Erie and Thorold have all helped supply additional resources.

Acting Fire Chief Matt Richardson says that because there are no nearby fire hydrants, additional tanker trucks have been called in to help, with seven total tankers being used.

In Port Colborne, the city is urging residents to keep their windows and doors shut because of smoke in the air. Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activity and take extra care, particularly those with respiratory conditions.

There's no word yet on the cause of the fire or any damage estimates, while Humberstone Road remains closed at Prince Charles Drive as crews continue to work in the area.
