The Royal George Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake is set to be rebuilt with help from a major federal investment.

St. Catharines MP Chris Bittle announced up to $25-million through the Build Communities Strong Fund to support the reconstruction of the historic theatre.

The more than 100 year old building closed in 2025 after exceeding its expected lifespan. The rebuild is expected to create about 850 jobs and generate an estimated $80 million in additional annual economic activity in the region.

The new Royal George will be fully accessible, with improved acoustics, public viewing areas, geothermal heating and cooling and a solar-powered roof system.

Construction is already underway, with the project designed to honour the theatre's history while creating a more modern and sustainable space for The Shaw and the community.
