Ontario’s Environment Minister Todd McCarthy says there are no recent issues with PCBs leaking from the former GM property in St. Catharines, but the ministry is reviewing how stormwater is being managed on site.
In a letter to St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens, McCarthy confirmed that PCBs in the city’s stormwater sewer have not been a problem since the property owner implemented a plan to plug the sewer and install a system to collect, store, and treat stormwater.
The ministry is aware that untreated stormwater is currently being stored on site and has referred the matter to its Enforcement and Investigation branch for further review.
McCarthy’s response followed an open letter from Stevens seeking details on inspections, monitoring, and the site’s cleanup progress.
