Carney to remove gas excise tax starting Monday, 10 cent-per-litre drop expected

Some lower gas prices are in the forecast for Canadians starting next week.

This morning, Mark Carney announced the federal government will suspend its gas excise tax beginning April 20th, with the measure set to remain in place until September 7th.

Fuel prices in parts of the country have climbed by more than 40 cents-per-litre since tensions between the United States and Iran escalated in February.

Officials say the temporary tax break is expected to bring gasoline prices down by about 10 cents-per-litre, with diesel dropping roughly four cents.

Locally, prices in Niagara have hovered around $1.70 a litre in the last week or so.
