A worsening fuel shortage in Cuba is creating uncertainty for travellers, prompting several major Canadian airlines to suspend flights to the island.
Air Canada, WestJet, and Air Transat have all adjusted service as Cuba faces an energy crisis that’s also affecting aviation fuel supplies.
Global Affairs Canada has also upgraded its travel advisory, warning of unpredictable disruptions to flights, power, and essential services.
Despite the situation, Canadians currently in Cuba are largely being told they will still make it home as scheduled, including MBC's own Dave Thomson, who is vacationing on the island.
Thomson says he and his travel group first began hearing about possible fuel and flight concerns over the weekend.
On the ground, Thomson says the impact of the fuel shortage hasn’t been obvious for resort guests.
However, he notes the situation is taking an emotional toll on resort staff.
For now, Canadians already in Cuba are being advised to stay in close contact with their airline or travel agent, while anyone planning to travel to the island in the coming weeks is urged to check their booking status, as many trips are being cancelled effective February 16.
Thomson says he plans to spend his remaining days doing what most vacationers are; enjoying the beach and hoping the situation stabilizes soon.
