Canada strengthens gender-based violence protections with Bill C-16

Advocates across Canada are welcoming the passage of Bill C-16, legislation aimed at strengthening protections against gender-based violence.

The new law creates Criminal Code provisions addressing femicide, coercive and controlling behaviour in intimate relationships, and the non-consensual sharing of sexually explicit deepfake images.

Supporters say the changes close long-standing gaps in the law and come as communities, including Niagara, continue to recognize intimate partner violence as a growing public safety issue.

Advocates are now calling for strong implementation of the legislation, along with continued investment in prevention, education and survivor supports.
