The way in which wine is consumed is changing, which could see a ripple effect for the industry here in the Niagara Region.
A new study by Brock University's Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute shows that while the older popular still enjoys bold reds, the younger generation is often seeking out lighter wines.
Because of this, Brock researches say emerging grape varieties Soreli and Cabernet Volos could soon make a significant impact on Ontario’s wine scene, as they're more sustainable for growers and well suited to produce lower-alcohol wines.
The team plans to bottle test wines in 2025 and continue sharing findings with industry partners as demand for low-alcohol, environmentally conscious wines grows.
