Arrest made in St. Catharines stabbing; Police search for suspect who stole from victim

Niagara Regional Police have arrested a suspect following a stabbing in downtown St. Catharines.

Around 4:20 a.m. on Sunday, October 5, officers were called to the area of Niagara Street and Queenston Street after a man was found suffering from stab wounds.

Following a coordinated investigation, police identified and arrested 48-year-old Mark Formanek, of no fixed address, on Thursday, October 9.

Formanek has been charged with attempted murder, disguise with intent, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Investigators have recovered a knife believed to be used in the attack and obtained video footage of the suspect before and after the incident.

Police say the victim’s condition has improved and he is expected to make a full recovery.

Detectives are now seeking a second suspect who allegedly stole the victim’s cellphone while he was injured and made no attempt to help.

That suspect is described as a white male, 25–35 years old, wearing black pants with a white logo on the left leg, a backwards hat, and riding a bicycle.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police. Investigators believe the stabbing was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
