Niagara Regional Police say an officer-involved incident has resulted in the death of a 38-year-old man.
Yesterday around 5:00pm, an Amber Alert was issued across parts of Southern Ontario after a one-year-old girl was reported missing, with Anthony Deschepper being named the suspect.
Last evening, police in south Niagara issued a shelter-in-place in the Crystal Beach area after reports that he may be in the area.
This morning around 2:30am police responded to the area of Thorold Stone Road in Niagara Falls, after finding Deschepper in a vehicle at a gas station. After an interaction with police, he was pronounced dead by paramedics as a result of multiple gunshots. The SIU says one officer discharged their firearm.
The Ontario Special Investigations Unit has taken over the investigation as there was police involvement. The area of Thorold Stone Road near the QEW is still closed as the investigation continues, while both ramps for the QEW at Thorold Stone are closed.
Deschepper was also alleged to have been involved in a shooting in Brampton before the Amber Alert was issued. The alert was called off after the young girl was found safe in the Niagara Region.
NRPS add that a woman was believed to have been driving Deschepper at the time of the police-involved shooting in Niagara Falls, and she is in police custody pending charges. During a media conference on Wednesday morning, the Ontario SIU says the firearm from the Brampton shooting was recovered, and that the vehicle named in the Amber Alert had been recovered by police, but was not the vehicle involved in Niagara Falls.
