The City of Niagara Falls is responding after 32 trees were deliberately damaged along the Millennium Recreational Trail.
Crews will begin removing the trees within the next two weeks for safety, with memorial trees replaced as soon as possible and remaining replacements planned for the fall.
The City estimates the damage will cost more than $20,000. Mayor Jim Diodati is calling it a senseless act and says restoration is a priority.
Ontario Power Generation will redirect a planned fall planting project to the site, adding up to 50 new trees this September.
Residents are being asked to report vandalism to Niagara Regional Police. A map of where the damaged trees were located has been released by the city as well.
