September 30 is a day for Canadians to remember the children who attended residential schools, honour Survivors and their families, and learn about the lasting impact of the residential school system.
Brandon Maracle, an Indigenous community leader, says sharing knowledge and stories is an important part of understanding that history.
He says remembering the past remains important as Canadians continue working toward reconciliation.
Sept. 30 is also Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led movement that raises awareness about the legacy of residential schools and honours Survivors.
