What's Good in Niagara? Popular Port Colborne Lions Club donuts for sale this weekend

If you've ever stood in line for one of the Port Colborne Lions Club's famous donuts, you already know they're worth the wait.

The club's annual Donut Day returns Saturday, June 13, with fresh-made donuts going on sale beginning at 9 a.m. at the Lions Club grounds. Club Administrator George DeRuyte says the tradition grew out of the massive popularity of the donuts sold during the Lions Club Carnival each summer, where lineups regularly stretched from one to two hours.

Visitors can choose between mixed and plain donuts, with boxes selling for $10. In true Lions Club fashion, a dozen actually means 14 donuts. Proceeds support local charities, youth sports organizations, community projects, and Lions International initiatives such as the Dog Guide School in Oakville.

DeRuyte says eager donut fans often begin arriving as early as 7:30 a.m., even though sales don't start until 9. His advice is simple - arrive between 9 and 11 a.m. to avoid disappointment.

The excitement doesn't stop there. The Port Colborne Lions Club is also preparing for its 95th annual Lions Club Carnival in July.

The event will feature midway rides, games, raffles, a 50-50 draw, pony rides, food vendors, and the return of the club's famous donuts. DeRuyte says the carnival remains one of Port Colborne's most cherished traditions and continues to draw families from across Niagara.
